Orange Juice's 'Secret Ingredient'

You buy branded orange juice, you kind of want it to taste, generally, the same. That expectation is met by blending different varieties and, in order to blend, storage is involved. premium brand orange juice -- the "100 percent pure" and "not from concentrate" kind that comes in the colorful carton and tastes consistently delicious. "secret ingredient" in all premium orange juices that companies are not required to put on their labeling. For the last 30 years, the citrus industry has used flavor packs to process what the Food and Drug Administration identifies as "pasteurized" orange juice. That includes top brands such as Tropicana, Minute Maid, Simply Orange and Florida Natural, among others. The addition of the flavor packs long after orange juice is stored actually makes those premium juices more like a concentrate, and consumers need to know that. Experts estimate two-thirds of all Americans drink Florida orange juice for breakfast, and companies spend millions on their marketing campaigns touting its health benefits. The "not from concentrate" brands appeared on store shelves sometime in the 1980s to differentiate them from frozen juice and other bottled concentrates. Despite its high price tag -- now up to $4 a carton -- sales of the premium brands have soared. But those juices don't just jump from the grove to the breakfast table. After oranges are picked, they are shipped off to be processed. They are squeezed and pasteurized and, if they are not bound for frozen concentrate, are kept in aseptic storage, which involves stripping the juice of oxygen in a process called "deaeration," and kept in million-gallon tanks for up to a year. Before packaging and shipping, the juice is then jazzed up with an added flavor pack, gleaned from orange byproducts such as the peel and pulp, to compensate for the loss of taste and aroma during the heating process. Different brands use different flavor packs to give their product its unique and always consistent taste. Minute Maid, for example, has a distinctive candy-sweet flavor juices are blended and stored and that flavor packs are added to pasteurized juice before shipping to stores. Flavor packs are created from the volatile compounds that escape from the orange during the pasteurization step. "It's not made in a lab or made in a chemical process, but comes through the physical process of boiling and capturing the [orange essence]." The pasteurization process not only makes the food safe, but stabilizes the juice, which in its fresh state separates. Adding the flavor packs ensures a consistent flavor. The quality of the juice based on color, flavor and defects are then graded. FDA does not require adding flavor packs to the labeling of pasteurized juice (which includes the from-concentrate as well as the not-from-concentrate versions), because, "it is the orange," The flavor of orange is one of the most complex and is made up of thousands of chemicals." "They are fine-tuned so each company has its trademark flavor If consumers have the false impression that pasteurized orange juice is not heated or treated because they have a picture of an orange on the carton, then they are not informed. The orange juice companies market their premium brands as fresh-squeezed and better than concentrated. screening of imports, and imported foods need to meet the same standards as do foods grown or produced domestically. It's just wrong that they aren't being transparent about it. We as a consumer have a right to know exactly what's in the foods we are buying." Still, it's a secret ingredient and no one seems to know about it, 'Oranges' is all it says on the label -- a perfect product." .

Yoga for obese too

There is always a laughter from those who do not exercise our body. That's how we neglect our  body. Rest is a misunderstood concept ."Rest to the body does not necessarily mean lying down on your bcak." It is a position that involves unused muscles, jus tlike standing upright is rest to someone who has been sitting for a long time. So many people have the urge to change their lives with yoga. The seven "S" of fitness are - suppleness, strength, stamina, shoes, style, slimness and "stitch in time". The suryanamaskar is one of the best strengthening exercise. Walking is also very good form of exercise.

People don't appreciate how important it can be in improving fitness.. It is important to select a proper running shoes. Obese people should never run. . And for those who  spend all day sitting on a chair  in their office should keep a 2-litre bottle of water on your desk and keep drinking. You will have to get up to empty you bladder. That way, you flush out your system, and get regular movement.

Instead of  running barefoot- shoes which are scientifically proven to enhance the distribution of body weight are personally recomended. As only the correct shoes can ensure that your body weight is properly distributed.

Going to gym only has a superficial effect on your body, while yoga penetrates deep and has  along lasting effect. It is said that the West has started appreciating yoga while we Indians, who actually invented it, still ignore it."

Also right type of nutrition of necessary no one group of food needs to be eliminated completely in a healthy diet. Take the misconception of avoiding sugar is the good way to stay slim, This is not true. Sugar is an important part of our diet. It is excess and artificial sugar replacements should be avoided.

A tea spoon of ghee with every meal will go a long way towards shedding extra fat. Our  tongue knows what we like and how much we should eat and we should trust it. Filtered groundnut oil is recomended for food. Pulses and green vegetables have lots of protein and there is no problem in exercising after eating but it should not be immediately after eating. The quality of Indian cows is good and its milk is nutritious than jersey cows.

creating new learning spaces

Is it really possible for us in India?

Contrary to the populat misconception, unschooling and deschooling are not from the West or only for the West. We need to understand that Shiksha and Education are not the same. We need to reclaim the meaning of shiksha and forms like guru-shishya parampara. Shiksha is more cloosely rooted in self-organised and experiental forms of learning. some of the initial experiments with Nai Taleem and Shantiniketan also tried to embody these principles but somewhere along the wat, they also got corrupted in the framework of institutionalised education....

In villages and even in most towns and cities, you can still find opportunities for apprenticeship learning, you caneasily get to forest, you can experience life in a joint family (full of rich relationships of all ages.). We luckily do not have to go to zoo to see animals; we can interact with them on the roads and in the fields. one can learn yoga without going to yoga centre. everywher, you can find enough kabaad (so-called waste) to jugaad with, to make something useful, beautiful and durable. one quite fortunatley does not have to pay a lot of money to acess them.

We need to honestly re-evaluate what is 'forward' and what is 'backward' in India, unlike the west we are fortunate to naturally witness birth as well as dath , we ar ein many ways much better off than our heavily institutionalised western counterparts.

In west millions of dollors are spent to bring small babies into the classroom so that the middle school children could intertact with them for a few hours a week.

The real threats to these vibrant indigenous learning resources are the institutional viruses that pose a roses like hte campaigns against child labour. one of the leading reasonf behind the degradation of human health today comes from the lack of authentic physical work and labour in our lives. it is important to re-look at the link between using our hands/body, meaningful work and the growth of our mind, spirit and emotional well-being..

Ask people who are interested in sharing their own experience and experiments with learning in different ways in their own lives. we do not believe that educators alone can envision and make the deeper changes in education that are necessary for the 21st century. People will diverse worldviews who are leading/supporting real-world experiments across many different domains needs to be in the discussion.

So for those who are genuinely interested in ppursuing real shiksha and supporitng others to do the same,I would frankly encourage you to walk out of the school system and walk-on to creating something new-learning spaces and learning webs that embody a deeper vision of himan learning' one that do not rest on commodification, cometiton, compartmentalisation or compulsion' one that deepan human wisdon, imagination and friendship.

We each need to invest ourselves in creating our own localised alternatives and connecting these to each other in dynamic ways. There can and should be a world with many streams, not just one mainstream. it is time for us in India to evolve a more mature vision of social equality- one that is not built on monoculture or copying the hypocritical West
